Southwest Airlines Sets 2028 Target to Replace Outdated Software Behind 2022 Holiday Meltdown

Southwest Airlines has announced it will replace the aging crew scheduling software that caused its massive operational collapse in December 2022. The outdated system, SkySolver, was unable to process the necessary reassignments during a severe winter storm, leading to about 16,700 flight cancellations. The airline is partnering with technology firm ARiVA for the new platform, known as Crew Optimization. However, CEO Bob Jordan stated that the complex, multi-year implementation will not be fully completed until 2028. This extended timeline is necessary to integrate the new system across the airline's vast network without disrupting current operations.
