Southwest Airlines Pilot Incapacitated by Falling Cockpit Display During Takeoff
A Southwest Airlines pilot was briefly incapacitated after being struck on the head by a falling flight display unit during takeoff from Las Vegas. The incident occurred on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 flight bound for Columbus, Ohio on May 17th. The First Officer assumed control of the aircraft, declared a PAN-PAN, and safely returned to the airport. According to a preliminary NTSB report, the display's quick-release lever was found not to be in the locked position following recent maintenance. The captain had recovered enough to assist with the landing, and no passengers were injured.
