South Africa's Airlink Faces Steep Penalty as Antitrust Probe Concludes

South Africa's Competition Commission has concluded its investigation into Airlink, recommending a penalty for excessive and predatory pricing. The probe focused on the Johannesburg-Mthatha route, where the airline allegedly abused its market dominance after South African Airways (SAA) ceased operations. The commission alleges Airlink's fares were substantially higher on this route compared to similar ones, harming both consumers and smaller competitors. The regulator has now referred the case to the Competition Tribunal, recommending a penalty equivalent to 10% of the airline's annual turnover. Airlink has denied the allegations of anti-competitive behaviour and has stated it will defend its position.
