South Africa Fuels Luxury Antarctic Flights with Sustainable Jet Fuel from Used Cooking Oil
South African energy and chemical company Sasol is now producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) derived from used cooking oil. This innovative green fuel is being utilized by the boutique airline Hi Fly for its luxury tourist flights from Cape Town to Antarctica. The flights, which cost around $120,000, are operated on an Airbus A340 aircraft. This development represents a significant milestone for South Africa's aviation industry in its efforts to decarbonize. The production at Sasol's Secunda plant showcases a practical application of turning waste products into high-value, lower-emission fuel.
