Shipowner Interest in New Vessel Orders Remains Strong in Asia, Falters in Europe
Global interest in ordering new ships remains firm, with 215 new vessels contracted in the first quarter of 2024. However, a significant geographical split is apparent, with European shipowners showing strong reluctance. High prices, long lead times, and uncertainty over future fuel choices are causing European buyers to hesitate, accounting for only 7% of new orders. In contrast, Asian shipowners, especially from China, Japan, and South Korea, are driving the market forward. They are actively investing in newbuilds, including modern dual-fuel ships. This trend highlights a major shift in maritime investment away from its traditional European base.
