Shetland's Lifeline Air Services Under Threat, Council Warns
Shetland Islands Council has issued a warning that its essential lifeline air services connecting to mainland Scotland are under threat. The current contract with airline Loganair, which is subsidized by the government and the council, is set to expire in March 2026. Citing concerns over the future affordability and reliability of these vital routes, the council is formally requesting a Public Service Obligation (PSO). A PSO would provide a legal framework to protect the services to key destinations like Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. The council believes this is the only way to guarantee the continuity of these critical connections for the islands.
