Shared Powerplant: How the Boeing 747-8 and 787 Dreamliner Use the Same Engine Family
It is true that both the Boeing 747-8 and the 787 Dreamliner are powered by the General Electric GEnx engine family. However, they utilize different variants tailored to each airframe's specific needs. The 787 Dreamliner uses the GEnx-1B, which is a key part of its 'more electric' architecture without traditional bleed air systems. In contrast, the 747-8 is equipped with the GEnx-2B, a derivative that was adapted to use a conventional bleed air system. Although the engine core is largely the same, the -2B has a smaller fan diameter and different thrust ratings to suit the four-engine configuration of the jumbo jet, replacing the older CF6 engines.
