Shared Power: The GEnx Engine Variants Powering Boeing's 747-8 and 787 Dreamliner

While the Boeing 747-8 and 787 Dreamliner are both powered by the General Electric GEnx engine family, they use distinct variants tailored to each airframe. The 787 utilizes the GEnx-1B, a 'bleedless' engine designed to integrate with the aircraft's modern electrical architecture. In contrast, the 747-8 is equipped with the GEnx-2B, a version which incorporates a traditional bleed air system. This modification was a simpler, more cost-effective solution for adapting the new engine technology to the 747's existing systems. Therefore, despite sharing a common core, the engines are not directly interchangeable between the two aircraft types.
