Scaling Sustainable Aviation Fuel: The Sobering Reality Behind Aviation's Green Goals
The aviation industry has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as its cornerstone strategy. However, scaling SAF production faces significant hurdles that threaten this ambitious goal. SAF currently costs two to five times more than conventional jet fuel and its production is severely limited by the availability of sustainable feedstocks. Current output accounts for less than 0.1% of global jet fuel consumption, a stark contrast to industry targets. While policy mandates are being introduced, a massive global effort in investment and technological development is required to overcome these challenges.
