Runway Safety System Absent in Miami Crash, Already in Place at Venice Airport
Following a fiery crash at Miami International Airport, investigators are focusing on the absence of a key safety feature on the runway. A Red Air flight caught fire after its landing gear collapsed, sending three people to the hospital. The incident has highlighted the lack of an Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS), which is designed to safely stop planes that overrun a runway. The National Transportation Safety Board has recommended this technology for years. In contrast to Miami, the smaller Venice Municipal Airport already has this critical safety system installed.
