Ruang Volcano Eruption in Indonesia Creates Significant Aviation Hazard with High-Altitude Ash Plume
The Ruang volcano in Indonesia experienced a significant eruption on April 17, 2024, creating a major hazard for regional aviation. Satellite imagery confirmed the eruption sent a large plume of ash and gas to extreme altitudes, estimated between 55,000 and 65,000 feet. This cloud contains high concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2), which is dangerous for aircraft engines and systems. Consequently, meteorological authorities issued a SIGMET, a formal warning to air traffic about the widespread volcanic ash. The event is being closely monitored to track the plume's movement through commercial airspace.
