RTX Details Minimal Airframe Modifications for ATR 72 Hybrid-Electric Demonstrator
RTX is advancing its hybrid-electric flight demonstrator program, aiming to install a 2-megawatt propulsion system on an ATR 72-600 with only minor structural changes. The project will replace one of the aircraft's standard Pratt & Whitney Canada engines with a system combining a 1-MW thermal engine and a 1-MW electric motor from Collins Aerospace. According to RTX, the primary modifications are limited to the engine nacelle, pylon, and the wing attachment points to handle the new system's weight and characteristics. Following the completion of ground testing, the company is preparing for the first flight tests of the modified regional turboprop, which are scheduled to begin in 2024.
