Rolls-Royce Secures UK Government Backing for Second, Smaller UltraFan Demonstrator
Rolls-Royce has secured £65 million ($81.7 million) in UK government funding to develop a second, smaller UltraFan engine demonstrator. This new version, designated UF30, will be built around a 30,000-lb.-thrust core specifically aimed at the future narrowbody aircraft market. The funding is part of a larger, long-term research and technology program with the UK's Aerospace Technology Institute. This development follows the successful completion of the first phase of tests on the larger, 100,000-lb.-thrust UF100 demonstrator. The UF30 project signals Rolls-Royce's strategic intent to re-enter the lucrative single-aisle engine market, potentially powering successors to the A320 and 737 families.
