Rolls-Royce Partners to Explore Small Nuclear Reactors for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production
Rolls-Royce is collaborating with Manchester University and the UK's National Nuclear Laboratory to investigate the use of small modular reactors (SMRs) for producing synthetic aviation fuel. The study will assess the technical and economic feasibility of using the high-temperature heat and power from SMRs to create hydrogen. This hydrogen would then be synthesized with captured carbon dioxide to produce e-SAF, a sustainable fuel crucial for decarbonizing aviation. This initiative aims to leverage Rolls-Royce's nuclear technology expertise to create a stable, long-term energy source for the future of flight. The partners will evaluate different reactor and chemical plant configurations to find the most efficient production pathway.
