Revisiting the Fatal 1989 Air Canada Runway Collision at LaGuardia
The article looks back at the fatal incident of Air Canada flight 304 on September 20, 1989. During its takeoff roll from New York's LaGuardia Airport, the Canadair Challenger jet collided with a fire department vehicle that had entered the active runway. The impact tore off the aircraft's nose gear and a wing, causing it to crash into the adjacent Flushing Bay. The pilot and one passenger were killed in the accident. A total of 22 people, including the co-pilot and the remaining passengers, survived the crash. The subsequent NTSB investigation cited the unauthorized entry of the fire truck onto the runway as the probable cause.
