Paul Scherrer Institute Inaugurates 'Sun-to-Liquid' Plant for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland has officially opened a demonstration plant to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This mini-refinery utilizes a 'sun-to-liquid' process, converting sunlight, water, and atmospheric CO2 into carbon-neutral kerosene. The project is a key collaboration between PSI, Empa, and ETH Zurich, leveraging technology from the ETH spin-off Synhelion. The plant's primary goal is to demonstrate the technical viability and scalability of the entire production chain. This initiative represents a significant step towards achieving net-zero emissions and decarbonizing the aviation sector.
