Panama Canal Congestion Risks Rise with Scheduled Maintenance and Weather Threats
The Panama Canal Authority has announced maintenance work on its Panamax locks from May 7 to May 15, reducing daily transit slots from 32 to 31. This scheduled work, combined with the onset of the rainy season, is raising concerns about potential increases in vessel waiting times. The rainy season often brings fog, which can further disrupt canal operations and lead to delays. While the larger Neopanamax locks are unaffected, shippers are cautious following the severe congestion experienced last year due to drought. The combination of maintenance and weather could once again create backlogs for global shipping.
