Oregon Department of Aviation to Trial Hydrogen-Powered Drones for BVLOS Operations
The Oregon Department of Aviation (ODAV) is launching a program to test hydrogen fuel cell-powered drones for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations. This initiative is a collaboration with Precision Integrated Programs, Doosan Mobility Innovation, and Iris Automation. The primary goal is to conduct long-range inspections of critical infrastructure, such as bridges and power lines. The program will leverage the extended flight endurance offered by hydrogen fuel cells, which can keep drones airborne for over two hours. This trial aims to demonstrate the safety, efficiency, and economic benefits of using advanced drone technology for statewide infrastructure management.
