One Rescued, One Missing After Small Plane Crashes Off Catalina Island

A single-engine Piper Cherokee Six aircraft with two people on board crashed into the ocean shortly after taking off from Catalina Island. The incident occurred Friday morning about three to four miles off the island's coast. The U.S. Coast Guard responded quickly, hoisting one of the men from the water to safety via helicopter. A search and rescue operation is currently underway for the second person who remains missing. The NTSB and FAA have been notified and will be investigating the cause of the crash.
