NTSB Urges Redesign of Boeing 737 Rudder Component Linked to Past Fatal Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued an urgent safety recommendation to the Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing concerning a rudder component on Boeing 737 aircraft. The call for a redesign follows an investigation into a part that failed on a UPS 737-400 cargo plane during a 2023 maintenance check. Investigators found a loosened nut on the rudder power-control unit, a component with a history of issues. This specific part was implicated in the fatal 1994 crash of USAir Flight 427, which killed all 132 people on board. The NTSB believes current inspection protocols are insufficient and that a redesign is necessary to prevent a potential catastrophic failure.
