NTSB Preliminary Report Suggests Engine Fire Caused Fatal Clearwater Plane Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report indicates an in-flight engine fire likely caused the fatal crash in Clearwater, Florida. The single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza V35 crashed into a mobile home park on February 1, killing the pilot and two people on the ground. The pilot had reported a total engine failure to air traffic control and was attempting to return to the airport. Investigators noted significant thermal damage to the engine, its components, and the firewall. The full investigation to determine the final cause is still ongoing.
