NTSB: Portable GPS Device Prevented Mid-Air Collision Involving American Airlines Regional Jet
An American Eagle CRJ-900, operating as Flight 5342, was involved in a near mid-air collision with a Piper PA-28 aircraft near Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The incident, which occurred in August 2023, saw the two aircraft come within 200 feet vertically and 0.14 miles horizontally of each other. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report, the collision was averted thanks to a portable GPS-enabled device. The pilot of the smaller Piper aircraft received a traffic alert from their uAvionix echoUAT device, prompting immediate evasive action. The NTSB concluded this technology was crucial in preventing a catastrophic accident.
