NTSB Cites Catastrophic Envelope Panel Failure in Fatal Eloy Hot Air Balloon Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board has issued its final report on the fatal hot air balloon accident in Eloy, Arizona, which occurred on January 14, 2024. The investigation determined the probable cause was the failure of a fabric panel in the balloon's envelope, leading to a rapid and uncontrolled descent. This structural failure, occurring near the top of the balloon, resulted in a deflation that the pilot could not stop. The crash tragically claimed the lives of the pilot and three passengers. Investigators noted the balloon had a history of fabric degradation and that the failed panel had been repaired by a person not certified by the FAA. The NTSB emphasized the importance of using authorized repair stations for all balloon maintenance.
