New York Area Airports to Install Vehicle Transponders After Fatal Ground Collision
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will equip ground vehicles at its major airports with transponders to improve safety. This decision follows a fatal collision in February at Newark Liberty International Airport, where two contractor employees were killed by a snowplow. The new equipment utilizes ADS-B technology, which will allow air traffic controllers and pilots to see the vehicles on their screens. This implementation addresses a safety recommendation from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The rollout will begin at Newark before expanding to JFK and LaGuardia airports.
