MIT Spin-Off Electra.aero Advances Plans for 1,200-Mile Range Hybrid-Electric Regional Aircraft
MIT startup Electra.aero is developing a nine-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft designed to transform regional travel. The innovative eSTOL (electric short takeoff and landing) plane is engineered for a remarkable range of 1,200 miles. It utilizes eight electric motors for lift and a single turbogenerator for cruise, a concept known as "blown lift." This design enables operations from runways as short as 300 feet and is projected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 70%. With pre-orders for over 2,000 aircraft, the company is now building a full-scale prototype, targeting certification by 2028.
