Maersk Warns Bunker Fuel Shock is Reshaping Global Shipping Economics
Shipping giant Maersk is warning that a major 'bunker shock' is fundamentally altering the economics of the maritime industry. The significant rise in the cost of very-low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) is forcing carriers to re-evaluate their operational strategies. According to Maersk CCO Vincent Clerc, the price pressure is substantial enough to change decisions on vessel speed and network structure. This could lead to a widespread return to 'slow-steaming' to conserve fuel, which in turn could impact supply chain reliability and lead to higher costs for customers.
