Lufthansa Calls for 'Reality Check' on Feasibility of EU's Synthetic Fuel Mandates
Lufthansa Group is urging a 'reality check' on the European Union's ambitious mandates for synthetic sustainable aviation fuels (eSAFs). Speaking at an industry summit, a senior executive questioned the feasibility of meeting the upcoming 2030 targets. The primary concern is the massive amount of renewable electricity required for eSAF production, which is not currently available at the necessary scale. To illustrate, meeting the mandate for Lufthansa Group alone would require the equivalent of half of Belgium's total renewable electricity output. The airline's warning highlights a potential major gap between regulatory goals and the practical realities of the energy infrastructure needed to support them.
