Los Angeles Port Volumes Surge as Shippers Reroute Cargo from East Coast Amid Labor Uncertainty

The Port of Los Angeles reported a significant year-on-year increase in container imports for May, marking its tenth consecutive month of growth. This surge in West Coast traffic contrasts with a notable slump at major ports on the US East and Gulf coasts. The primary driver of this cargo shift is the looming threat of a potential labor strike, as contract negotiations between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and employers have stalled. Shippers are preemptively diverting their cargo to West Coast gateways to avoid possible disruptions. Port of LA officials state they have the capacity and fluidity to handle the increased volumes.
