LaGuardia Airport to Equip Ground Vehicles with Transponders Following Fatal Air Canada Crash

New York's LaGuardia Airport is set to install transponders on its fleet of ground vehicles. This safety measure is a direct response to the fatal 1992 crash of an Air Canada Fokker F-28. The aircraft collided with a de-icing truck on the runway during takeoff in a snowstorm, resulting in 27 fatalities. The new transponders will allow air traffic controllers to see the vehicles on their radar screens, significantly improving situational awareness. This technology is intended to prevent similar runway incursions, especially during low-visibility conditions.
