JFK Close Call: Swiss Air Aborts Takeoff After Air France Aligns with Wrong Runway
A serious incident was narrowly averted at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport when a Swiss Air flight had to abort its takeoff. The Airbus A330 was cleared for departure as an Air France Boeing 777, intended for an intersecting runway, incorrectly lined up for the same occupied runway. An automated airport collision alarm system alerted air traffic controllers to the potential disaster. The controller immediately instructed the Swiss flight to cancel its takeoff, preventing a collision. The two wide-body jets came within approximately 2,500 feet of each other, and the FAA has launched an investigation.
