Jeddah Container Spot Rates Decline as Gulf Landbridge Routes Solidify
Container spot rates from Asia to the Saudi port of Jeddah are beginning to decrease as alternative landbridge routes become more established. These multimodal sea-land routes, which transport containers from UAE and other Gulf ports overland to Jeddah, are providing a viable alternative to the high-risk Red Sea transit. Shippers are reportedly gaining confidence in this solution, which bypasses the Houthi-threatened Bab al-Mandeb Strait. While the landbridge option is more complex logistically, its increasing reliability is putting downward pressure on the previously surging ocean freight rates. However, rates remain significantly elevated compared to pre-crisis levels.
