India-Gulf Container Shipping Rates Plummet as Capacity Stabilizes and Backlogs Clear
Container shipping spot rates from India to the Gulf have sharply decreased, returning to levels seen before the Red Sea crisis. Prices for a 20ft container from Nhava Sheva to Jebel Ali have fallen to between $250 and $300, down from a peak of over $800. This significant drop is attributed to the return of vessel capacity and the easing of severe cargo backlogs at Indian ports. Initially, carriers had redirected vessels to this trade lane to manage disruptions from Houthi attacks, which created a temporary capacity shortage and rate spike. This normalization in ocean freight is also putting downward pressure on air freight rates out of India, which have reportedly softened.
