Iberia A350 Winglet Damaged By Botched Water Cannon Salute, Forcing Flight Cancellation
An Iberia Airbus A350 sustained significant damage during a water cannon salute at José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The ceremony, intended to celebrate the first anniversary of the Madrid-Guayaquil route, went awry when a fire truck's water jet struck the aircraft's wing. The high pressure from the water tore off a piece of the A350's composite winglet. As a result of the damage, the aircraft was grounded for inspection and repair. The incident forced the cancellation of the return flight to Madrid, and passengers had to be rebooked.
