IATA 2023 Safety Report: Record Low Accident Rate Despite Increase in Fatalities
The International Air Transport Association's (IATA) 2023 safety report has been released, showing a year of record-breaking safety by several key metrics. The overall accident rate improved to 1.08 per million sectors, the lowest figure ever recorded by the organization. The fatality risk for passengers also reached a historic low, confirming that flying remains the safest form of long-distance travel. However, the report also documented one fatal accident involving a turboprop aircraft in Nepal, which resulted in 72 fatalities. While overall safety trends were positive, this single incident led to a higher number of deaths compared to the previous year.
