GE Aerospace and Safran Advance Hybrid-Electric Engine for Greener Aviation
GE Aerospace, along with partners Avio Aero and Safran, is developing a pioneering hybrid-electric turboprop engine as part of the EU's Clean Aviation program. The project centers on the Catalyst engine, which integrates an electric motor with the thermal engine to optimize performance and reduce fuel consumption. This 'mild' hybrid system is designed to significantly cut CO2 emissions, especially when paired with 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Following successful ground tests, the team is preparing for flight demonstrations. The technology aims to revolutionize regional air travel and represents a significant step toward decarbonizing the aviation industry this decade.
