Fuselage Panel Blows Out Mid-Flight on Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX
An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX experienced a critical in-flight emergency shortly after departing from Portland, Oregon. A fuselage panel, known as a door plug, detached from the aircraft mid-air, causing a rapid and violent decompression of the cabin. The incident left a gaping hole in the side of the aircraft, clearly visible in photographs from inside the plane. The pilots declared an emergency and successfully returned to Portland International Airport with no serious injuries reported. This event prompted an immediate investigation by the FAA and NTSB, leading to the grounding of similar 737 MAX 9 aircraft for inspections.
