FIATA Challenges IATA's Direct Air Waybill Policy, Citing Supply Chain Risks
The International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) is calling for a review of recent changes to Air Waybill (AWB) conditions implemented by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Effective June 1, 2024, the new rules permit IATA member airlines to issue AWBs directly to shippers, bypassing the traditional role of freight forwarders. FIATA argues this move sidelines the forwarder's critical function in ensuring cargo is safe and compliant for air transport. The organization has expressed serious concerns that this could introduce significant legal and security risks. Consequently, FIATA is urging IATA to suspend the implementation and engage in dialogue to address the potential negative impacts.
