FAA Outlines Challenges and Opportunities in New eVTOL Pilot Program
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is actively developing a new regulatory framework to train and certify pilots for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This initiative is crucial as existing rules for airplanes and helicopters do not adequately cover the unique flight characteristics of these powered-lift vehicles. Key challenges include standardizing training across diverse eVTOL designs and determining appropriate flight time requirements. The agency is considering a model-specific certification approach, similar to a type rating, to ensure pilot proficiency. This new program represents a critical step in enabling the future of advanced air mobility operations.
