FAA Lifts Grounding Order for MD-11 Cargo Jets
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has ended its grounding order for 90 McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo aircraft. The directive was issued on May 24 after cracks were discovered in a critical structural component on the forward fuselage. Following the fleet-wide alert, manufacturer Boeing developed an inspection and repair program that the FAA has now approved. Major operators like FedEx Express and UPS Airlines can return the jets to service once the newly mandated inspections are completed. The FAA has given airlines 30 days to complete the initial checks.
