FAA Investigates Close Call Between United Airlines Jet and Military Helicopter at John Wayne Airport
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a close call involving a United Airlines flight and a military helicopter near John Wayne Airport in Orange County. The incident occurred as United Flight 535, an Airbus A320, was on its final approach. According to air traffic control audio, a controller instructed a U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter to perform a 360-degree turn for spacing. The United flight crew then reported a TCAS Resolution Advisory, an automated collision avoidance maneuver, and began to climb. The FAA will determine the exact proximity between the two aircraft as part of its investigation.
