FAA Awards Key Contracts to Validate Urban Air Mobility Separation Standards
The FAA's Center of Excellence for Unmanned Aircraft Systems, ASSURE, has awarded new research contracts to validate requirements for cooperative separation in Urban Air Mobility (UAM). This research is a critical part of the FAA's "Innovate28" plan, which aims to enable initial UAM operations in the U.S. by 2028. The contracts will fund simulations and flight tests to determine how future air taxis can safely detect and avoid one another using broadcast surveillance data. The results will directly inform the creation of federal regulations and industry standards needed for safe, high-density air taxi services in urban environments.
