European Airlines Lobby to Repeal Green Hydrogen-Based Fuel Mandates
Major European airline associations are reportedly lobbying to repeal key elements of the EU's ReFuelEU Aviation law. Their primary focus is the mandate requiring the use of green hydrogen-based synthetic fuels, or RFNBOs, starting in 2030. Airlines argue these e-fuels are not available at the required scale and are prohibitively expensive, making the targets unrealistic. They contend the mandate will harm their competitiveness against non-EU carriers who are not subject to the same rules. The industry is advocating for a greater focus on other sustainable aviation fuels, like biofuels, as a more viable near-term solution.
