Europe on Track for Short-Haul Electric Flights by 2026, Major Airlines Invest
Short-haul electric passenger flights could become a reality in Europe within the next four years, with a target launch date of 2026. Airlines like easyJet are collaborating with manufacturers such as Rolls-Royce and Wright Electric to develop zero-emission aircraft. Initially, these will be smaller planes, seating between nine and 19 passengers, suitable for routes under one hour. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is actively developing certification rules to accommodate this new technology. While significant challenges remain, particularly with battery density, the industry is optimistic about decarbonizing regional air travel.
