End of an Era: Why Production Ceased for the 'Environmentally Sound' BAe 146 Freighter

The BAe 146/Avro RJ, often called the "Whisperjet," was a unique four-engine aircraft lauded for its quiet operation and short takeoff capabilities. These features made it an environmentally sound choice for operating in noise-sensitive, city-center airports. Despite its advantages, production of the aircraft ceased in the early 2000s. The primary reason for its discontinuation was its four-engine design, which proved less fuel-efficient and more costly to maintain compared to newer twin-engine competitors. While no longer in production, many converted passenger versions continue to operate as specialized cargo freighters today.
