East Midlands Airport Installs £23m Runway Safety System to Prevent Overruns
East Midlands Airport is installing a new £23 million runway safety system designed to prevent aircraft overruns. The technology, known as an Engineered Materials Arrestor System (EMAS), uses a bed of crushable concrete blocks to safely stop a plane that goes beyond the end of the runway. This significant investment makes East Midlands only the second airport in the UK to adopt this specific safety feature, following Leeds Bradford. The installation is part of a wider £120 million improvement program at the airport. Work will be carried out overnight to avoid disrupting flights and is scheduled for completion in October.
