Divergent Paths: Hydrogen Aviation Proponents Contrast Strategies for Decarbonization
As the aviation industry pursues decarbonization, the remaining proponents of hydrogen are adopting contrasting strategies. Airbus is advancing its ZEROe program, aiming to develop a completely new hydrogen-combustion aircraft for entry into service by 2035. This 'clean sheet' approach requires solving complex challenges related to onboard fuel storage and aircraft design. In contrast, engine manufacturer CFM International is focusing on developing a hydrogen-combustion engine through its RISE program that could potentially be retrofitted onto existing airframes. This strategy could accelerate adoption but faces its own technical hurdles. These different philosophies highlight the ongoing debate over the most viable path to implementing hydrogen propulsion in commercial aviation.
