Court Ruling Shifts Legal Battleground for Amazon Air Pilots and Teamsters Union
The Teamsters union, representing pilots for Amazon's air cargo contractors, has suffered a significant legal setback in its unionization efforts. A US appeals court ruled that the pilots' labor disputes fall under the Railway Labor Act (RLA), which severely restricts their ability to conduct strikes or secondary picketing against Amazon. The union had argued that Amazon is a "joint employer" and should be subject to the National Labor Relations Act, but the court disagreed. This decision shields Amazon from direct labor actions by its contract aircrews. Consequently, the Teamsters now plan to shift their campaign away from the courts and towards Congress and regulatory agencies to seek legislative changes.
