Clean Aviation Approves Flight Testing for CFM's Open-Fan Engine Demonstrator
The European Union's Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking has officially approved the flight-test phase for CFM International's open-fan engine demonstrator. This critical milestone, part of the Hydea program, clears the way for the engine to be tested on a modified Airbus A380 testbed. The open-fan architecture, developed under the Rise program by GE Aerospace and Safran, aims to achieve a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to current narrowbody aircraft engines. Flight testing is scheduled to begin in the mid-2020s. This approval marks a significant step towards validating the technology for potential use on next-generation aircraft in the mid-2030s.
