Brazil to Produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel from Tropical Fruit with $2.4 Billion Investment
Brazil is advancing its role in green energy by developing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from the macaúba, a native palm fruit. Acelen, a refiner backed by Abu Dhabi's Mubadala, is investing $2.4 billion over ten years to build a new biorefinery for this purpose. The project aims to produce 20,000 barrels of SAF and renewable diesel daily. This initiative is notable as it utilizes a non-food crop, planting the macaúba on degraded pastureland to avoid competing with food production. This positions Brazil to become a key supplier of SAF, helping the global aviation industry meet its decarbonization targets.
