Boeing and CFM Finalizing Software Fix for LEAP-1B Engine Safety Directive
Boeing and CFM International are close to deploying a software-based solution for a safety issue concerning LEAP-1B engines on the Boeing 737 MAX. The problem, identified in a 2023 FAA Airworthiness Directive, relates to a potential high-pressure turbine disk failure that could lead to an uncontained engine event. Rather than a complex and costly hardware replacement across the fleet, the new software will use existing sensors to detect specific vibration signatures that precede a failure. Upon detection, the system will automatically and safely shut down the affected engine. This proactive measure is in its final stages of development and testing, aiming to mitigate a significant safety risk with minimal operational disruption.
